3 Questions for Today's Jazz Musicians

by Lilian Dericq, 2020

3 Questions for Today's Jazz Musicians book cover

The conception of Three Questions is directly related to the publication of Pannonica de Koenigswarter's book: Three Wishes: An Intimate Look at Jazz Greats, in 2006. This well regarded 'champion of jazz musicians' compiled this book in the sixties, when jazz was at the height of its popularity.

In creating a follow-up to Pannonica’s book, Lilian Dericq chose not to adopt the notion of the three wishes, but to develop his own questions, based on his desire to bring a wider understanding of the world of jazz, and its future. Those questions are:

  1. "What musicians, from 1900 onward, would have made up your 'dream band'?"
  2. "What is one of the most memorable musical events of your career so far?"
  3. "What is your wish for the 21st Century?"

The 334 responses compiled in this book come from musicians ranging in age from 28 to 100 years, coming from 42 countries, and playing 28 different instruments. The oldest, Hal Singer, was born in 1919 and played with Duke Ellington, the youngest, Justin Faulkner, was born in 1991 and played with Branford Marsalis. But regardless of their age, country of origin, or preferred instrument, they all express a touching gratitude towards the musicians they admire, and a passionate faith in their art, as they believe it is – or should be – deeply impacting the world way beyond the music scene.

This book delivers a thoughtful, eloquent and even moving contemporary testimony of the lives, talent and desires of many of today’s greatest jazz musicians, and the role they play in everyone's life around the world.
